MFL - French

MFL at Newton Hill

At Newton Hill, our language of choice is French. French is taught weekly with a particular focus on reading and phonics.

Children enjoy learning French songs, playing vocabulary games and practising French vocabulary in role-play scenarios. The children at Newton Hill are also taught about the different cultures in French-speaking countries.

We follow the La Jolie Ronde scheme.

French is not a statutory requirement in KS1, however the children are exposed to some French vocabulary on displays around school. In KS2, children develop their knowledge of key grammatical concepts which are revisited throughout the scheme. They are introduced to the grapheme/phoneme correspondences in French and these are regularly reviewed and revisited in lessons.
